Tanning and Sensitive Skin: A Safe Approach

Don't let sensitive skin stop you from achieving that gorgeous golden glow! At MEGATAN, we're here to guide you through safe tanning practices, even if you're prone to irritation, eczema, or psoriasis.

Hello sunshine seekers! Jessie-Lee here, your friendly Salon Manager and Tanning Expert at MEGATAN. Today, we're tackling a topic that often comes up in our salons: tanning with sensitive skin. Whether you experience general sensitivity, or deal with specific conditions like eczema or psoriasis, achieving a beautiful, healthy tan is absolutely possible. It just requires a little extra care and the right approach. Let's dive into how you can get that radiant glow safely and comfortably!

    Understanding Sensitive Skin and Tanning

Sensitive skin is a broad term, but it generally means skin that reacts more easily to external factors such as products, temperature changes, or UV exposure. For those with conditions like eczema (atopic dermatitis) or psoriasis, the skin barrier is often compromised, making it even more vulnerable. This doesn't mean tanning is off-limits, but it does mean we need to be extra mindful.

The key is to minimise irritation, avoid harsh chemicals, and always prioritise skin hydration and protection. Our goal is a beautiful tan, not a red, itchy one!

Pre-Tan Prep: Your Sensitive Skin's Best Friend

Preparation is paramount when you have sensitive skin. It sets the stage for an even tan and helps prevent any unwanted reactions.

    • Patch Test Everything: This is non-negotiable! Before using any new tanning lotion, fake tan, or even a new moisturiser, apply a small amount to an inconspicuous area (like behind your ear or on your inner arm) and wait 24-48 hours. Look for redness, itching, or irritation.
    • Gentle Exfoliation: Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, creating a smooth canvas for tanning. However, for sensitive skin, harsh scrubs are a no-go. Opt for a very gentle, fragrance-free scrub or an exfoliating mitt with light pressure. Do this 24 hours before tanning.
    • Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Well-hydrated skin tans better and holds a tan for longer. Start moisturising daily in the days leading up to your tan. Choose hypoallergenic, fragrance-free moisturisers. Pay extra attention to dry areas like elbows, knees, and ankles.
    • Shave/Wax Carefully: If you need to remove hair, do it at least 24 hours before tanning. This gives your pores time to close and reduces the risk of irritation from tanning solutions entering open follicles.

    Tanning Options for Sensitive Skin

You have a few routes to choose from, depending on your preference and skin's tolerance.

    1. Sunbed Tanning with Caution

If you prefer sunbeds, it's crucial to be extra careful. Always start with very short sessions and gradually increase the time if your skin tolerates it. Listen to your skin – if it feels tingly or uncomfortable, stop immediately. Consult with our trained staff at MEGATAN; they can help guide you on appropriate session lengths for your skin type.

Product Choice: Look for sunbed creams specifically designed for sensitive skin. These are often fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and packed with skin-soothing ingredients. Avoid tingle lotions or those with strong bronzers if you're prone to irritation.

SAFETY DISCLAIMER: Always consult a healthcare professional if you have a pre-existing skin condition like eczema or psoriasis before using sunbeds. Overexposure to UV radiation can exacerbate certain conditions and increase the risk of skin damage. Always use appropriate eye protection.

    2. Sunless Tanning (Fake Tan): Often the Safest Bet

For many with sensitive skin, sunless tanning is the preferred and safest option. There's no UV exposure involved, which greatly reduces the risk of irritation and sun damage.

    • Choose Wisely: Opt for fake tans that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin, often labelled 'hypoallergenic,' 'fragrance-free,' or 'dermatologist-tested.' Lotions and mousses tend to be gentler than sprays, which can contain alcohol that dries out the skin.
    • Ingredients to Look For: Seek out products with hydrating ingredients like aloe vera, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin E. Avoid products with parabens, strong artificial fragrances, and dyes if these are known irritants for you.
    • Application: Apply with a tanning mitt to ensure an even, streak-free application and to protect your hands. moisturise notoriously dry areas like elbows, knees, and ankles with a barrier cream just before applying the fake tan to prevent over-absorption and dark patches.

    3. Natural Sun Tanning (with Extreme Caution)

If you choose to tan naturally under the sun, it's crucial to be extremely vigilant, especially with sensitive skin. Short, controlled exposures are key, and always, always use SPF.

    • High SPF is a Must: Even if you want to tan, a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher is non-negotiable. Reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating. Look for mineral-based sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) as they are often better tolerated by sensitive skin.
    • Limit Exposure: Seek shade during peak sun hours (11 am - 3 pm). Short bursts of sun exposure are safer than prolonged periods.
    • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your body and skin hydrated from the inside out.
    • After-Sun Care: Immediately after sun exposure, apply a soothing, hydrating after-sun lotion to help cool and replenish your skin. Aloe vera is fantastic for this.

Managing Eczema and Psoriasis While Tanning

For those with specific conditions, extra considerations are vital. ALWAYS consult your GP or dermatologist before starting any tanning regimen, as UV exposure can sometimes trigger flare-ups or interact with medications.

    • Eczema: UV light can sometimes improve eczema, but overexposure can worsen it. Stick to very short, controlled sunbed sessions or opt for fake tan. Ensure your skin is well-moisturised before and after. Avoid tanning on active eczema patches, as this can cause further irritation or uneven tanning.
    • Psoriasis: Similar to eczema, controlled UV exposure is sometimes used as a treatment for psoriasis (phototherapy). However, this is done under medical supervision. If tanning independently, be extremely cautious. Fake tan is generally a safer alternative. Ensure any lotions or creams you use are free from ingredients that might irritate psoriatic plaques.

The golden rule for both conditions: if it stings, itches, or causes discomfort, stop immediately. Your skin's health is always the top priority.

    Post-Tan Care for Sensitive Skin

    • Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise: This can't be stressed enough! Daily moisturising with a gentle, fragrance-free product will extend your tan and keep your sensitive skin happy and hydrated. It also helps prevent flaking.
    • Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild, pH-balanced, fragrance-free body wash or cleanser. Avoid hot showers, which can strip your skin of natural oils and cause dryness.
    • Pat Dry: Instead of rubbing vigorously with a towel, gently pat your skin dry to avoid irritation.
    • Stay Hydrated: Continue to drink plenty of water to support your skin's health from within.

Jessie-Lee's Top Tips for a Happy Sensitive Tan

    • Listen to Your Skin: It's constantly telling you what it needs. If something feels off, pay attention.

    • Medical Advice First: If you have a diagnosed skin condition, always get the green light from your doctor before tanning.
