How to Tan Safely: 10 Golden Rules
Achieving that sun-kissed glow doesn't have to mean putting your skin at risk. At MEGATAN, we're all about responsible tanning, helping you look fabulous and feel great. Here are our top 10 golden rules for tanning safely.
Hello sunshine seekers! Jessie-Lee here, your friendly Salon Manager and Tanning Expert at MEGATAN. We all love that gorgeous, healthy glow a beautiful tan brings, don't we? But here's the thing: achieving it responsibly is absolutely key. Tanning safely isn't just about looking good; it's about protecting your skin for the long haul. So, whether you're hitting the sunbeds, enjoying the great outdoors, or opting for a sunless solution, I've got your back (and your front!) with my 10 golden rules for tanning safely. Let's get glowing, the smart way!
1. Know Your Skin Type (and Respect It!)
This is rule number one for a reason! Everyone's skin reacts differently to UV exposure. Are you a Fitzpatrick Type I (always burns, never tans) or a Type IV (tans easily, rarely burns)? Knowing your skin type is crucial for determining how long you should expose your skin to UV, whether it's from the sun or a sunbed. If you're fair-skinned and prone to burning, shorter, more frequent sessions (or opting for sunless tanning) are your best bet. Never push your skin beyond its natural limits.
2. Start Slow, Build Gradually (The Tortoise Wins the Race!)
Patience is a virtue, especially when tanning! Don't rush into long tanning sessions, whether outdoors or on a sunbed. Start with shorter exposure times and gradually increase them as your skin builds a base tan. This minimises the risk of burning, which is the absolute enemy of a healthy, long-lasting tan. Think of it as building a beautiful masterpiece, layer by layer.
3. Always Use a High-Quality Tanning Lotion (Your Skin's Best Friend)
This is non-negotiable for both sunbed and outdoor tanning. Tanning lotions aren't just about getting darker; they hydrate your skin, prevent dryness, and help you achieve a more even, deeper, and longer-lasting tan. For sunbeds, always use a lotion specifically designed for indoor tanning – never outdoor SPF lotions, as they can damage the acrylic beds. For outdoor tanning, SPF is your superhero! Choose a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 and apply generously.
4. Protect Your Face and Sensitive Areas
Your face, lips, and décolletage are more delicate than the rest of your body. Use a dedicated facial tanning product or an SPF on your face, even if you're aiming for a tan elsewhere. Always protect your lips with an SPF lip balm. Many sunbed lotions also have specific formulas for the face. And don't forget those little areas like the tops of your feet and ears – they burn easily!
5. Hydration, Hydration, Hydration! (Inside and Out)
Tanning can be dehydrating. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your tanning session to keep your skin (and body!) happy. Externally, moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! A well-hydrated skin tans better, retains its colour longer, and looks healthier. Apply a good quality after-sun or tan extender daily.
6. For Sunbeds: Wear Eye Protection & Follow Salon Guidelines
This is not optional! Your eyelids offer minimal protection against UV rays, and repeated exposure can seriously damage your eyes. Always wear proper UV-blocking eye protection when using a sunbed. Furthermore, always choose a reputable salon like MEGATAN, where trained staff will assess your skin type, recommend appropriate session times, and ensure equipment is well-maintained and compliant with UK regulations. Never exceed recommended session times.
7. For Outdoor Tanning: Seek Shade & Avoid Peak Hours
The sun's rays are strongest between 11 am and 3 pm. If you're tanning outdoors, try to avoid direct sun exposure during these peak hours. Instead, seek shade under a parasol or tree. You'll still tan, but with less intensity and reduced risk of burning. Reapply your SPF every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.
8. Exfoliate Before Tanning, Not During!
Gentle exfoliation a day or two BEFORE your tanning session (whether sunbed or sunless) helps remove dead skin cells, creating a smooth canvas for an even, streak-free tan. However, avoid harsh exfoliation immediately before or after tanning, as this can strip away your fresh tan and irritate your skin.
9. Listen to Your Skin (The Ultimate Guide)
Your skin is clever and will tell you if it's had enough. If you feel any tingling, discomfort, or see redness starting to develop, STOP IMMEDIATELY. A healthy tan is never red or sore. Burning damages your skin and increases risks, so always err on the side of caution. A slight pinkness that fades to a golden glow is one thing; outright redness is a definite no-no.
10. Consider Sunless Tanning for a Risk-Free Glow
If you're concerned about UV exposure but still crave that bronzed look, sunless tanning is your best friend! Modern self-tanners and spray tans offer incredibly natural-looking results without any UV risk. They're perfect for topping up an existing tan or achieving a full glow completely safely.
