    Outdoor Tanning Lotion

In the UK we call this outdoor tanning lotion / sun lotion. Same products, different word.

Outdoor tanning lotion is the one category where the US and UK use the same words. It covers SPF tanning oils, bronzing sunscreens and accelerators made for the sun rather than a tanning bed. Australian Gold is the US reference brand; the UK adds Malibu, Nivea Sun and Cyclax.

The important rule runs the other way: outdoor lotions are for the sun. Do not use them in a tanning bed. Salons ask you not to because oils and SPF products are not designed for bed acrylics, and because an SPF blocks the very UV you are paying for.

    Choosing an outdoor lotion

Decide on protection first. A product with SPF 15 to 30 and a bronzer gives color while you protect; a dry tanning oil with SPF 6 to 15 is for skin that already tans easily. Then decide on finish: lotions, dry oils and sprays all sit differently on the skin, and water resistance matters if you are swimming.
