Holiday Tan Prep: Your 2-Week Countdown
Dreaming of sun-kissed skin on your holiday? Our 2-week holiday tan prep guide will help you achieve a beautiful, long-lasting glow safely and effectively.
Hi gorgeous tanners! Jessie-Lee here, your trusty Salon Manager and Tanning Expert from MEGATAN. The countdown to holiday season is officially ON! Whether you're jetting off to a tropical paradise or enjoying a staycation with a difference, everyone wants to arrive with that enviable, healthy glow. But how do you achieve it without looking like you've tried too hard, or worse, ended up with a lobster-red disaster? That's where I come in! Today, we're diving into the ultimate holiday tan prep guide: your essential 2-week countdown to a stunning, long-lasting tan.
Pre-holiday tanning is all about preparation, protection, and smart tanning. It's not just about getting colour, it's about conditioning your skin to hold that colour beautifully and safely. Let's get you holiday-ready!
Week 2: The Foundation Phase - 14-7 Days Before Departure
This is your prime time for setting the stage. Think of it like priming a canvas before painting a masterpiece – you want a smooth, even surface for the best results!
Exfoliation is Key (and I mean KEY!)
Around 10-14 days before your holiday, give your entire body a thorough exfoliation. This removes dead skin cells, creating a fresh, smooth canvas for tanning. It helps prevent patchiness and ensures your tan fades evenly. You can use a gentle scrub, an exfoliating mitt, or a dry brush. Focus on areas prone to dryness like elbows, knees, and ankles.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
After exfoliating, slather on a rich moisturiser daily. Well-hydrated skin tans better and holds onto its colour for longer. Dry skin can lead to a flaky, uneven tan, which is the last thing you want on holiday! Drink plenty of water too – hydration from the inside out makes a huge difference to skin health.
Patch Test Any New Products
If you're planning to use any new self-tanners or tanning accelerators, do a patch test on a small, inconspicuous area of skin (like behind your ear or inner arm) at least 48 hours beforehand. This ensures you won't have any unexpected reactions right before your trip.
Consider Your Hair Removal
Any waxing or shaving should ideally be done at least 24-48 hours before your first tanning session (whether that's self-tan or sunbed). This allows your pores to close, preventing irritation and ensuring a smoother application.
Begin Your Sunbed Sessions (Responsibly!)
If you plan to use sunbeds to build a base tan, this is a good time to start. Remember, moderation is key! Begin with short, infrequent sessions and always use a high-quality tanning lotion specifically designed for sunbed use. This isn't about getting dark quickly; it's about stimulating melanin production to help your skin tan more effectively and reduce the risk of burning when you hit the natural sun.
- Always follow guidance from trained salon staff.
- Never exceed recommended session times.
- Wear protective eyewear during every session.
- Hydrate your skin before and after.
Week 1: The Glow-Up & Protection Phase - 7 Days to Departure
Now we're getting close! This week is all about refining your colour, ensuring maximum longevity, and packing those essentials.
Continue Your Sunbed Sessions (If Applicable)
If you're building a base tan, continue with your responsible sunbed sessions, still using your tanning lotions. Aim for 2-3 sessions this week, spaced out, to gradually build that lovely golden hue. Your last sunbed session should be at least 2-3 days before you fly to allow your tan to fully develop and settle.
Self-Tanning for an Instant Boost
If you prefer a sunless glow, or want to top up your sunbed tan, apply your favourite self-tanner 2-3 days before you leave. This gives it time to develop fully and allows for any touch-ups if needed. Remember to apply to clean, exfoliated, and moisturised skin for the best results. Use a tanning mitt for an even, streak-free finish.
Don't Forget Your Face!
Your face often tans differently from your body. Consider a dedicated facial tanning product to ensure an even, natural look. Apply a few days before you go.
Pack Your SPF – It's Non-Negotiable!
Even with a base tan, sun protection is PARAMOUNT. A base tan offers minimal SPF protection (equivalent to about SPF 2-4), so you absolutely still need to pack and use a high-quality, broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30. Apply it generously and reapply frequently, especially after swimming or sweating. Protecting your skin prevents burning, premature ageing, and helps your tan last longer by preventing peeling.
- Always choose a broad-spectrum SPF.
- Apply 20-30 minutes before sun exposure.
- Reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming/sweating.
- Don't forget areas like ears, feet, and scalp.
Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise (Still!)
Keep your skin hydrated right up until you leave and throughout your holiday. This will help maintain your tan and prevent dryness. A good after-sun lotion or tan extender will be your best friend while you're away.
The Day Before You Go
Lightly moisturise. Don't exfoliate again unless absolutely necessary for a patchy area, as this will remove your hard-earned colour. Pack your bags, double-check your passport, and get excited!
On Holiday: Maintain That Glow!
Once you're enjoying the sunshine, continue to apply SPF diligently. Take breaks from the sun, especially during peak hours (11 am - 3 pm). Keep your skin hydrated with after-sun lotions and drink plenty of water. If you want to enhance your tan while safely in the sun, use a natural tanning intensifier (but always after applying your SPF, never instead of!).
A Final Word from Jessie-Lee
Remember, the goal of pre holiday tanning is to prepare your skin for sun exposure and achieve a lovely, healthy glow, not to get burnt. Burning damages your skin and makes your tan peel, which is the opposite of what we want! Listen to your skin, be sensible, and enjoy the process. Following this 2-week holiday tan prep guide will have you stepping off that plane looking and feeling fabulous, ready to make some amazing memories.
