Can You Tan with Tattoos? Sunbed & Tattoo Guide
Got ink? Planning a sunbed session? It's a common question: Can you tan with tattoos? The short answer is yes, but with a few crucial considerations to keep your art vibrant and your skin safe.
Hello, gorgeous tanners and tattoo enthusiasts! Jessie-Lee here, your friendly Salon Manager and Tanning Expert at MEGATAN. Today, we're diving into a topic that pops up in our salons all the time: tanning with tattoos. Whether you've just got fresh ink or you're rocking a sleeve of masterpieces, you want to keep your art looking its best, right? And you still want that beautiful, golden glow! So, let's explore how to achieve both safely and effectively.
The Lowdown: Tanning and Your Tattoos
Tattoos are an investment – a beautiful, personal expression etched onto your skin. Naturally, you want to protect them. The main concern when it comes to tanning, especially on a sunbed, is potential tattoo fading. UV light, both from the sun and sunbeds, can break down the tattoo ink pigments over time. This can lead to your vibrant colours looking a little dull or your crisp black lines becoming softer.
But don't fret! With the right approach and a bit of MEGATAN magic, you can absolutely enjoy your tanning sessions without sacrificing the beauty of your body art. It's all about understanding the science and taking preventative measures.
New Tattoos: Hands Off!
This is non-negotiable, my friends. If you have a brand-new tattoo, stay away from sunbeds and direct sun exposure completely. A fresh tattoo is essentially an open wound. Exposing it to UV light or even just the heat and sweat of a sunbed session can lead to:
- Infection: The skin is vulnerable, and sunbeds, while cleaned, are not sterile environments.
- Severe fading: The ink hasn't fully settled, and UV light will cause significant colour loss.
- Damage to the skin: Sunburn on a new tattoo can cause blistering, scarring, and permanent damage to your artwork.
- Delayed healing: Your body needs to focus on healing, not fighting off UV damage.
How long should you wait? The general rule of thumb is to wait until your tattoo is completely healed. This usually takes around 4-6 weeks, but it can vary depending on the size, placement, and your individual healing process. Consult your tattoo artist for their specific recommendation. When in doubt, wait longer! Your art will thank you.
Tanning with Healed Tattoos: Your Action Plan
Once your tattoo is fully healed, you can start tanning again, but with some clever tactics to keep that ink looking fresh.
1. Hydration is Key
Well-hydrated skin tans better and helps to keep tattoos looking vibrant. Dry skin can make tattoos appear dull and contribute to fading. Drink plenty of water and moisturise daily, especially in the days leading up to your tanning session.
2. Protect Your Art with SPF
This is your absolute best friend when tanning with tattoos. Before you step into the sunbed, apply a high-factor SPF directly onto your tattoos. Think SPF 30 or higher. This creates a barrier that helps to block those harmful UV rays from reaching your ink.
Even though SPF 20 is a good start, for direct application on tattoos, we always recommend going higher, ideally SPF 30 or 50, if you have very vibrant or new-ish healed tattoos you want to preserve. You can find dedicated tattoo sunscreens, but a good quality broad-spectrum SPF will do the trick.
3. Use a Quality Tanning Accelerator
Tanning accelerators (also known as tanning lotions or creams) are essential for achieving a deeper, longer-lasting tan while on a sunbed. They condition your skin, promote melanin production, and can even help to enhance the appearance of your tattoos. Look for lotions rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and hydrating ingredients.
Some lotions even have ingredients specifically designed to brighten and enhance tattoos. Avoid lotions with bronzers directly on very light-coloured or white tattoos, as they can sometimes stain. However, for most tattoos, a good bronzer can actually make the colours pop against your tanned skin!
4. Moderate Your Sessions
Regular, shorter sessions are always better than infrequent, long ones, both for your skin health and for preserving your tattoos. Gradual tanning reduces the intensity of UV exposure at any one time, lessening the impact on your ink. Listen to your skin and avoid over-tanning.
5. Aftercare is Crucial
After your sunbed session, continue to hydrate your skin. An excellent after-tanning lotion or moisturiser will lock in your tan and keep your tattoos looking fresh. Look for products with nourishing ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, and vitamin E.
Moisture Lock Tan Extender is brilliant for keeping your skin hydrated and your tan lasting longer, which indirectly helps your tattoos look their best against your glowing skin.
Do Tattoos Fade in Sunbeds? The Reality
Yes, tattoos can fade in sunbeds, just as they can fade from natural sun exposure. UV radiation breaks down the pigment in the tattoo ink. However, with the right protection (SPF is non-negotiable for tattoos!), proper hydration, and smart tanning practices, you can significantly minimise this fading and keep your tattoo vibrant for years to come.
Some colours fade faster than others. Lighter colours like yellow, orange, and white are often more susceptible to fading than darker colours like black and blue. This is another reason why targeted SPF on your tattoos is so important.
A Word on Sizzling Lotions
Sizzling lotions, like our ProTan Beaches & Créme Sizzling Butter, contain tingle ingredients that increase blood circulation to the skin, enhancing your tan. While many tanners love the tingling sensation and deep results, some people with sensitive skin or new-ish healed tattoos might find them a bit intense directly on their ink. If you're concerned, apply a layer of SPF over your tattoo first, or test the tingle lotion on a small, less visible part of your tattoo to see how your skin reacts.
Tattoo Enhancement Products
Did you know there are products specifically designed to enhance and protect tattoos while tanning? These often contain ingredients that hydrate, brighten, and shield tattoo colours. While we don't currently stock a dedicated tattoo-only product, many of our high-quality tanning accelerators are packed with skin-loving ingredients that benefit your tattoos too!
My Top Tips for Tattooed Tanners
- Always wait until new tattoos are fully healed (4-6 weeks minimum) before any UV exposure.
- Apply a high SPF (30+) directly to all your tattoos before every sunbed session.
- Use a premium tanning accelerator to nourish your skin and promote an even tan.
- Keep your skin hydrated daily, both inside and out.
- Opt for shorter, more frequent tanning sessions.
- Moisturise with a good after-tanning lotion to prolong your tan and keep ink vibrant.
So there you have it! Tanning with tattoos is absolutely doable when you approach it with care and knowledge. Your beautiful body art and your radiant glow can coexist beautifully.
