Achieving a perfectly even, all-over tan, including those tricky-to-reach areas like your bum, is totally possible with the right approach. Join me, Jessie-Lee King from MEGATAN, as we uncover the secrets to a seamless glow.
Hello sunshine seekers! Jessie-Lee King here, your friendly tanning expert and Salon Manager at MEGATAN. We all dream of that gorgeous, even, head-to-toe glow, don't we? But let's be honest, getting those often-hidden areas, like our derriere, to match the rest of our body can be a bit of a challenge. Nobody wants a two-tone situation when they're rocking their favourite bikini or feeling fabulous in their birthday suit! Today, we're diving into the art of bum tanning – yes, you heard me right! We're going to make sure your bum gets the bronze love it deserves for a truly seamless, all-over tan.
Why is Bum Tanning Tricky?
It's not just you! Tanning your bum can be more difficult than other areas for a few reasons:
- Limited Sun Exposure: Unless you're a dedicated nudist, your bum often sees less natural sunlight than your arms or legs, meaning it starts paler.
- Skin Thickness: The skin on your bum can be a little thicker and less receptive to tanning than other areas.
- Positioning Problems: Getting into the right position to ensure even coverage, whether with UV or self-tan, is key.
- Product Application: Reaching every nook and cranny for a streak-free finish can be a literal stretch.
But fear not! With a little know-how and the right products, you can achieve that perfectly bronzed behind.
Prepping for a Perfect Bum Tan: The Essentials
Preparation is absolutely crucial for ANY tanning, and especially for bum tanning. Think of it as laying the perfect canvas for your masterpiece!
- Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate!: This is non-negotiable. Use a gentle scrub or exfoliating mitt to slough away dead skin cells. Pay extra attention to your bum. This creates a smooth surface for an even tan and helps prevent streaks and patchiness. Do this 24 hours before tanning.
- Hair Removal: If you wax or shave, do this at least 24-48 hours before tanning. This allows your pores to close, preventing irritation and tiny dots of tan.
- Moisturise: Hydrated skin tans better and holds a tan longer. Focus on any dry areas like your bum, knees, and elbows. Do this after exfoliating, but NOT immediately before tanning (unless using a barrier cream).
- Cleanse Thoroughly: Right before tanning, ensure your skin is clean and free of any lotions, oils, or deodorants. These can create a barrier and lead to an uneven tan.
Achieving an Even Bum Tan with Sunbeds
If you're a fan of sunbeds for an all-over glow, here's how to ensure your bum doesn't get left behind:
- Vary Your Positions: Don't just lie flat on your back or front. Try alternating positions, lifting your hips slightly, or even doing a 'frog' pose (knees out, soles of feet together) to expose more of your bum to the lamps. Some sunbeds also have built-in leg and bum tanners, so ask your salon if they have these.
- Use a Tanning Accelerator: A good quality tanning accelerator will boost your natural melanin production, helping you tan faster and deeper, even in those harder-to-reach spots. Look for formulas with skin-conditioning ingredients too.
- Watch Your Time: Always stick to recommended exposure times and build up your tan gradually. Overdoing it won't give you a darker tan, just a higher risk of burning.
- SPF for Sensitive Areas: If you find certain areas of your bum are particularly sensitive or you've had a little too much sun exposure recently, consider applying a low SPF to those specific areas while still allowing the rest to tan.
Self-Tanning Your Bum: The At-Home Guide
Self-tanning is a fantastic way to get an all-over glow without UV exposure. Here's how to master the art of self-tanning your bum:
- Choose the Right Product: A mousse or lotion is often easier to control than a spray for this area. A gradual tan moisturiser can also be a good option for building up colour slowly and subtly.
- Use a Tanning Mitt: This is your secret weapon for streak-free application. It protects your hands and helps distribute the product evenly.
- Work in Sections: Apply the self-tan in small sections, using circular motions. Start with one cheek, then the other, ensuring you blend well towards your inner thighs and lower back.
- The Mirror Trick: Use a full-length mirror and a hand mirror to check your progress and ensure you haven't missed any spots. Getting into a slightly squatting position can also help you reach.
- Ask for Help (if comfortable): If you have a trusted friend or partner, they can help you reach those truly awkward spots for a flawless finish.
- Barrier Cream: Apply a thin layer of moisturiser or barrier cream to any areas you want to keep lighter or prevent over-tanning, such as in between your bum cheeks, around your inner thighs, or any scars.
- Blend, Blend, Blend: The key to a natural finish is seamless blending. Pay particular attention to the crease under your bum and where it meets your legs.
Post-Tan Care for a Lasting Glow
Once you've achieved your desired bum tan, maintaining it is key for longevity and an even fade:
- Moisturise Daily: Keep your skin hydrated! This prevents your tan from drying out and flaking, which can lead to patchiness. Our Australian Gold Moisture Lock Tan Extender is brilliant for this.
- Gentle Cleansing: Avoid harsh scrubbing or abrasive soaps on your bum. Opt for gentle, moisturising body washes.
- Top-Ups: For self-tan, reapply every few days as needed to maintain your colour. For UV tanning, stick to a sensible maintenance schedule.
- Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin healthy from the inside out, which contributes to a better-looking tan.
Safety First, Always!
While we're all about that gorgeous glow, your skin health is paramount. Remember:
- UV Tanning: Always use a reputable salon (like MEGATAN!) and never exceed recommended exposure times. Protect sensitive areas if needed, and always wear eye protection.
- Sun Exposure: If you're tanning outdoors, ALWAYS use a broad-spectrum SPF, even on your bum! Reapply regularly, especially after swimming or sweating. Sunburn is never a good look and seriously damages your skin.
- Patch Test: If trying a new self-tanning product, always do a patch test 24-48 hours beforehand to check for any allergic reactions.
