Beautiful tans start with healthy skin. Whether you prefer sunbeds or self-tan, a solid skincare routine will improve your results and keep your skin looking its best. Here's your complete skincare guide for tanners.

    Hydration Is Non-Negotiable

Dry skin is the enemy of a good tan. It flakes, fades unevenly, and doesn't absorb UV or self-tanning products well. Make hydration your top priority.

    • Drink 2-3 litres of water daily
    • Apply body lotion within 3 minutes of showering
    • Use heavier creams at night for deep hydration
    • Look for hyaluronic acid and glycerin in formulas
    • Don't forget to moisturise your face differently than your body

    Exfoliation Schedule

Regular exfoliation removes dead skin cells for more even tan absorption and prevents patchy fading.

    • Exfoliate 24-48 hours before tanning sessions
    • Use gentle scrubs, not harsh acids before UV exposure
    • Focus on rough areas: elbows, knees, ankles
    • Exfoliate 2-3 times per week for maintenance
    • Avoid exfoliating immediately before self-tan application

    Pre-Tanning Prep

What you do before tanning affects your results. Prepare your skin properly for the best colour payoff.

    • Shower before your session - clean skin tans better
    • Skip perfumes, deodorants and makeup
    • Apply a thin layer of accelerator lotion
    • Wear loose, dark clothing post-session

    Post-Tanning Care

The hours and days after tanning are crucial for developing and maintaining your colour.

    • Wait 4+ hours before showering after UV sessions
    • Use lukewarm water, not hot
    • Pat dry gently - don't rub
    • Apply tan extender immediately after showering
    • Avoid chlorinated pools for 24 hours

    Ingredients to Look For

Choose skincare products that complement your tanning routine.

    • Aloe vera: Soothes and hydrates
    • Vitamin E: Repairs and protects
    • Coconut oil: Natural moisture barrier
    • Shea butter: Deep conditioning
    • Avoid retinol and AHAs close to tanning sessions
