    Walnut Shell Extract

Walnut shell extract, often sourced from the outer green husk of the walnut, is a potent natural ingredient prized for its deep colourant properties. In the context of tanning, it acts as a cosmetic bronzer, meaning it imparts an immediate superficial colour to the skin upon application. This colour is not a result of melanin stimulation or UV activation but is purely a surface stain. The active compound responsible for this darkening effect is juglone, a naphthoquinone found in walnuts. Juglone binds temporarily to the keratin in the skin, creating a visible tan-like hue. While it offers an instant aesthetic improvement, this colour typically washes off with soap and water. It's frequently incorporated into self-tanning lotions, sprays, and mousses to provide an immediate visual guide for application and a desirable initial glow before any DHA-induced tan develops.
