Photoageing
Photoageing, also known as 'solar elastosis', is a significant concern for anyone exposed to the sun. Unlike intrinsic ageing, which is a natural biological process, photoageing is an extrinsic factor driven by UV radiation. When UV rays penetrate the skin, they damage collagen and elastin fibres, the proteins responsible for skin's firmness and elasticity. This damage leads to the breakdown of the skin's structural support, resulting in wrinkles, sagging, and a leathery texture. Furthermore, UV exposure disrupts melanin production, causing sunspots (lentigines), freckles, and uneven skin tone. Protecting the skin from UV radiation through sunscreen, protective clothing, and avoiding peak sun hours is crucial in preventing and mitigating the effects of photoageing.
