Melanocyte
Melanocytes are crucial components of the skin's defence mechanism and pigmentation system. Located in the basal layer of the epidermis, these cells are responsible for synthesizing melanin through a process called melanogenesis. Melanin is then transferred to surrounding keratinocytes (skin cells) via dendrites, forming a protective cap over the cell nucleus. This cap shields the DNA from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, thus playing a vital role in preventing sun damage and reducing the risk of skin cancer. The amount and type of melanin produced by melanocytes determine an individual's natural skin tone, hair colour, and eye colour. Factors like sun exposure can stimulate melanocytes to produce more melanin, leading to tanning.
